World’s Largest Hydrogen Battery Hybrid Mining Haul Truck Goes Into Service
Multinational mining company Anglo American, headquartered in the UK, today launched a prototype of the world’s largest hydrogen-powered mining transport truck in South Africa.
Hydrogen Battery Hybrid Mining Truck
The 2-megawatt (MW) hydrogen-battery hybrid truck generates more power than its diesel predecessor and is capable of carrying a payload of 290 tonnes (320 tons).
The truck includes a 1.2 MWh battery, as the transport truck system uses multiple fuel cells, which provide up to 800 kW of power.
It is designed to operate under the day-to-day operating conditions of its PGM mine in Mogalakwena, in northeastern South Africa. The mine is the largest open pit platinum group metal mine in the world. Anglo American intends to replace a fleet of 40 trucks there which consume around one million liters of diesel per year.
The truck is part of Anglo American’s nuGen Zero Emissions Transportation Solution (ZEHS), a green hydrogen system at the mine site. The system will draw power from a solar farm to power a hydrogen electrolyser to split water, which will then supply trucks with green hydrogen.
Project ZEHS is expected to be fully operational by 2026. It is the first step to making eight of the company’s mines carbon neutral by 2030. The global mining company has set a goal to bring all of its net-zero operations by 2040.
“People told us three years ago that it wouldn’t happen, it’s not a good idea. Now they’re really starting to realize that,” Soles said during a presentation in the southeastern city. “Our vision is to see this unfold in our business and in the mining industry. It’s Anglo’s choice whether or not to commercialize this.”
