Scientists at BHU’s Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) say they have developed a device that is unique in India for the on-site production of ultra-pure hydrogen.

According to the team, at a time when India made a commitment to net zero emissions by 2070 at the COP26 climate summit, this is a major development in the United Nations sustainable development goals. , the device is 100% indigenous and every component is made in IIT (Banaras Hindu University).

“Easily installable in gasoline pumps, some of the critical needs of the device include the production of hydrogen for hydrogen vehicles, the ease of recharging electric vehicles and the power supply for mobile towers, among others. The compact and ergonomically designed device meets durability and represents socio-economic benefits, ”said Rajesh Kumar Upadhyay, associate professor, Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology.

“It is based on membrane technology for the on-site production of ultra-pure hydrogen from methanol. It generates hydrogen, which powers the fuel cell to generate electricity (electricity). In addition, the energy produced can be used for charging electric vehicles, supplying electricity to mobile towers, and can also be installed in gasoline pumps to produce hydrogen for hydrogen vehicles ”, said he added.

Upadhyay claimed that the device is easy to use and covers a minimum space of 2 m2 (square meter). In addition, it only requires 0.6 liters / h of methanol for the production of approximately 900 liters / h of hydrogen.

Upadhyay and his team are also working on a similar device that will run on natural gas. It will produce hydrogen at a much lower cost and be even more compact. The project is funded by GAIL (India) Ltd. He added that he will soon start testing the natural gas-based device for on-site hydrogen production.

Pramod Kumar Jain, Director of IIT (BHU) Varanasi, said: “The device developed has the potential to change the outlook for hydrogen energy in India and turn hydrogen into an energy source to meet the needs. of transport and electricity of India.
